Work Description:
- Following a designers example, prepare electronic page layouts
- Work can be similar to, but is generally less creative than, that of a graphic designer
- Work with digital prepress systems to electronically assemble images into pages
- Prepare graphic elements to be used in print materials for electronic reproduction
- Enter digitized data from a designer’s layout into electronic prepress systems
- Operate scanners to digitize images for color separations
- Color-correct and digitally manipulate images with image- editing software for desired results
- Work with designers and press operators to obtain desired results in the print production process
- Produce film images that are then stripped into position in preparation for making plates for the printing press
- Operate digital and traditional color proofing devices
- Work with image setters and film processors
- May work with a variety of software to correct and add to files created by others

- Ability to make visual comparisons and see slight differences in shapes, colors, and shades
- Ability to repeat digital tasks accurately and quickly
- Ability to use words and numbers
- Ability to make decisions based on facts and experience
- Ability to do precise work and check for accuracy
- Eye-hand coordination
- Computer skills and ability to learn new technology
- Ability to communicate clearly and work with a group
- Ability with graphic arts software
- Basic knowledge of computers and electronic devices
Education and training:
- Training in electronic publishing, digital imaging, and prepress techniques at a two-year institution
- Proven skills learned both on the job and in coursework
- Portfolios shown to prospective employers to demonstrate abilities
Salary range:
- $9 – $11 per hour to start
- Oregon average is $13.50 per hour.
- Wages are generally higher in Portland
Job outlook:
- Balanced demand for workers. Individuals with proven computer skills and ability to work with others will be most successful.
- Cross-training in all areas of prepress, scanning and color correction and image assembly is desirable.
- Traditional (non-digital) techniques being supplemented and eventually replaced by digital technology. Workers with knowledge of traditional and digital techniques who can adapt to change are highly desirable
- Opportunities to work variable shifts
